6 Spindle Operation

The QCJ5 is equipped with either a 60,000 or 100,000 RPM spindle. Due to these very high rates of speed certain precautions should be taken.

Always run the spindle with a tool in the collet!

Always ensure your QCJ5 air supply is on before running your Quick Circuit.

General machine Requirements

Compressed Air Requirements:

  • Required Filtration: Class 3 filter grade at least 5µm for solids
  • Water Content: Class 4, Max. pressure dew point +3C
  • Total Oil Content: Class 2, max oil content 0.1mg/m3
  • Required Pressure: Output pressure should be from 85psi to 95 psi. Note: over 95 psi will void your warranty.
  • Required Flow: Output capacity 5.8 CFM or 164 liters/min.

Power: T-Tech supplies a pressure regulator/air filter for every QCJ5 set to 95 psi. The electrical source for the QCJ5 should be either a fused 115V at 50-60hz or a 230V outlet.

Recommended settings for initial use: UP air pressure: 15-20 psi DOWN air pressure: 15- 20 psi

Note: UP Force should be slightly more than the Down Force due to the weight of the head assembly.

AIR GAP pressure: 6-8 psi

Tool Insertion: Ensure the tool ring is flush with the collet when tools are inserted. Check to make sure there is not a tool already in the Tool Pod when loading tools in the Tool Pods.

① The “Maximum Z Stroke” is the maximum clearance between the tool and the aluminum plate. NOTE: This is the maximum material thickness
you can place on your QCJ5.
② The “Rapid Plane” is set at a distance above (or below) the “Material Height”. The actual distance amount is defined by the user.
NOTE: The “Rapid Plane” is used to allow the QCJ5 to move at full traverse down to the “Rapid Plane”, then slow down to the user-
defined feed rate before entry into the material.
③ The “Material Height” is defined as the top of the work piece. NOTE: The “Material Height” is automatically set by the ContactByTouch
target whenever material has been added, flipped over, adjusted, or a tool is changed.
④ The “Depth Of Cut” is defined as the depth the tool will cut into the material. NOTE: This is set in the tool table for each tool.
⑤ The “Plate Height” is defined as the top of the QCJ5 Table Top. This also sets the “Maximum Z Stroke” length. NOTE: This is set by
the factory, and should not need to be adjusted.

The QCJ5 Tool Table seen above can be accessed by clicking the icon on the tool bar at the top of the IsoPro window.

You may also press the “F4” key to access the Tool Table.

The Tool Table menu provides access to the “Load Tools” function. This designates tool pod locations for each tool required to mill your prototype. Click the “Load Tools” Button and the machine will move to the insert tool position, and prompt you to open/close the collet. ‘PUT TOOL’ to return to the designated tool pod, ‘GET TOOL’ to retrieve the tool from the tool pod for replacement or removal then Return to Previous Position.

The Speed and Feed Table shows the default settings by tool type and size. To create custom speed and feed table select New and create your own custom Speed and Feed Table. We recommend you name it by material type and thickness because it saves the tool information including depth of cut. Example: “Rogers 3003 .020” By having the thickness in the name you ensure your depth for drills and contour routers cut all the way through and not into the table top.

Note: The ContactByTouch Options window can be seen above. Within this menu you can configure the QCJ5 to determine the material plane for each tool. Setting the Z-axis Feed value defines the speed that the spindle is lowered to the table. You may also use the ContactByTouch target location to determine the material height.
